Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader

Here I sit, trying to work on my discussion questions for Media and Technology class, with the tv on! Yes, I know. Shame on me for watching tv instead of doing my homework, or thinking I can do both. Funny that the game show "Are you smarter than a fifth grader" is on because I teach 5th grade. So far, I'm two for two. Easy questions from 1st and 2nd grade. As I think about what I'm supposed to be doing, I birdwalk a little and start wondering if I am smarter than a fifth grader. Do I really know the stuff that I expect my students to know? Sure, I have the teacher's addition and it has all the answers in it, but would I know that stuff if I didn't have the teacher's book? I find any excuse to second guess myself. At this point, I'm 3 for 3. Yep, I'm on a roll. Alas, I'm having trouble focusing on one activity and now I'm 4 for 4 answering questions on this game show. So, I'm going to end my blog and finish watching this show and then I'm going to finish answering the questions for chapters 1-4.

Let's see if a fourth time is the charm. I tried commenting on this yesterday and each time did something wrong so it never was posted. I can assure you that the first attempt was probably much better worded that what this will be! :)

In response to the tv show, I think our brains sometimes go on information overload and we need to just stop and watch that show or listen to a cd or whatever. I tried listening to a cd and writing a paper a month ago and thought I was going to pull my hair out because no ideas were flowing. All it took was a few minutes away from the work to find my focus. In moments like those, I often wonder if these classes are a "sensitivity training" in disguise. :) Perhaps we'll be more able to identify with and relate to the overload that occurs to students in the future.

By the way, you're smarter than a fifth grader or else despite getting a perfect score. Otherwise, you wouldn't be their teacher!

Read Dr. Hebert's blog. She got rid of her tv so she could get more work done. I'm not saying do that. Lord knows I can't!

I tell my friends all of the time that I am a self diagnosed ADHD adult. It seems like I always have 10 different tasks going on at once. I usually go from one task to another over and over.....I really need to get more focus so that I can get all of this work completed.....Does anyone else seem as overwhelmed as I do?

Sometimes I don't feel smarter than a fifth grader.

I definitely cannot scold you for multi-tasking or at least attempting to multi-task. I must admit that I often do other things while attempting to slowly get work done.

Honestly, this week alone while working on various task I have carried on chats on "Skype", watched television, talked on the phone and dealt with my kids. At one point I even had my in-laws and sister-in-laws over visiting and carrying on while I was attempting to get some work done.

Hey, you might as well still enjoy life even if you are tied to a computer........LOL

I listened to my children play Rock Band all day Saturday while I worked on my assignments. I used to think I could multitask but now I think I am just ADD.
